The Young Leaders Program of The Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago aims to help youth develop leadership skills and learn the value of working as a team. Beginning in 1981 as an essay-writing competition, the program broadened its scope in 1984 by challenging students to develop projects that would benefit the community, and in 1991, earned its current name. Since then, hundreds of students have participated in the competition to make tangible contributions in their communities through investigative science research. Almost every secondary school in the country now participates in the program, along with youth groups, vocational centers and cadet forces.

Every year Croatia brings together GLOBE Students and Teachers for a countrywide festival and competition. Teams from each GLOBE School are required to compete in a variety of events and present a poster project. Student teams also have the option of presenting original research projects based on GLOBE Protocols and data collection. This year over 25 schools presented research, an activity that is especially encouraged by the Croatian GLOBE network as it directly contributes to current scientific   research activities as well as pedagogical practices. According to GLOBE Country Coordinator Diana Garasic, the Annual Festival and Competition is one of GLOBE Croatia’s most exciting events. “In this rich experience of 14 years, I could really say that these annual conferences are the most important driving force in GLOBE implementation and we hope that our Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, together with the Education and Teacher Training Agency will continue to support them,” she stated.

Ms. Norma Stigall, GLOBE Teacher at Phoenix Magnet Elementary School in Alexandria, Louisiana, led her Pre-K class on a scientific expedition to study the scientific elements of the world they live in. Ms. Stigall introduced these young students to the hands-on approach of GLOBE by guiding them through the steps of observing and measuring the ever-changing aspects of their environment. With rulers in hand, a group of four year old students set out to observe and study Atmosphere and Phenology factors within selected areas. Learning the concept of using different measurement tools such as a rain gauge to measure rainfall, or a ruler to measure shallow water depth, these young scientists began to learn the meaning of terms such as length, width, height, and depth in relation to GLOBE data measurements.

The Climate and Land Cover (CLC) Project, a joint effort between The GLOBE Program and The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to validate land cover classification and related climate models, is one of the Intensive Observing Periods (IOPs) within the GLOBE Student Climate Research Campaign. GLOBE IOPs provide students from around the world with opportunities to take themed measurements over short periods of time and analyze their data. NOAA Scientists involved in the Climate and Land Cover Project are also analyzing the photographs submitted online by GLOBE Students to test the accuracy of land cover types against satellite images of Earth’s surface.
